NFL Week 9 Overnights: CBS Gets Best Figure For '17; NBC Down With Raiders-Dolphins

CBS yesterday had its best Sunday of the NFL season, as a national window featuring Chiefs-Cowboys and Tony Romo calling his old team's game for the first time delivered a 14.2 overnight rating to lead all NFL TV partners in Week 9. That is 11% higher than a national window featuring Colts-Packers last year on CBS. Broncos-Colts in the Week 9 national window two years ago drew a 16.0 overnight. CBS also drew a 9.2 overnight for the regional window, up 19% from last year. Meanwhile, NBC drew its lowest Week 9 "SNF" rating since it acquired the package prior to the '06 season. Raiders-Dolphins last night drew a 9.6 overnight, down 18% from an 11.7 for Broncos-Raiders last year. Raiders-Dolphins also is the first Week 9 "SNF" to fall below an 11.0 overnight. While down from recent years, "SNF" still delivered a primetime win for NBC among all nets. Sacramento and New Orleans led all markets last night, with each drawing a 16.1 local rating. S.F.-San Jose-Oakland was No. 3 at a 14.3 rating, while Miami-Ft. Lauderdale was No. 6 at a 13.6. Fox drew a 9.6 for its singleheader yesterday, down 23% from last year (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

POCKET PROTECTORS: In Dallas, Matt Mosley wrote the decline in NFL ratings "probably" has more to do with the "overall product than the protests." It "doesn't help to see stars such" as Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Texans QB Deshaun Watson go down for the season, as no one "wants to watch teams led by backups." If the NFL is a "QB-driven league, the NFL might want to do even more to protect them." College football is "more unpredictable and fun right now" (DALLASNEWS.com, 11/3).

SECOND ACT: In Minneapolis, Mark Craig wrote ESPN's Randy Moss is a "TV media star," which "isn't something anyone saw coming." ESPN Senior Coordinating Producer Seth Markman keeps a list of current NFLers he "thinks will be great on TV," and Moss "never came close to making that list." Markman said, "This is one of the most shocking career paths I’ve ever seen in this business. He had the personality, but I never imagined that he would want to do this" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 11/5).
