Sharapova Expands Brand, Partners With Architect To Design Health, Wellness Facilities

Maria Sharapova has partnered with architect Dan Meis on an as-yet-unnamed business to "design health and wellness facilities (and tennis courts) for hotels and resorts around the world," according to a cover story by Brian Braiker of AD AGE. The Sharapova-Meis venture will "look to revamp the drab hotel gym experience and create upscale, modern stand-alone fitness and tennis facilities." Sharapova was first "approached by Meis" while serving her 15-month suspension from tennis for the use of a banned substance. Meis said, "One of the niches we carved in the marketplace early was to think about the fan experience. We didn't think about the perspective of the athletes." Braiker writes Sharapova's 15-month ban "forced her to think hard about life after tennis." Her candy company Sugarpova is "expected to generate" $10-12M in sales this year, with all proceeds for the rest of the year "going to victims of Hurricane Maria." Sugarpova's new chocolate line will be "arriving this month on shelves in Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning and Burlington Coat Factory." She also "wants to expand" Sugarpova into "home goods, sleep and loungewear" (AD AGE, 10/30 issue).
