Former Dodgers Owner O'Malley In Talks With MLB To Take Over Historic Dodgertown

Former Dodgers Owner Peter O'Malley has "been in talks" with MLB to "eventually take over" Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., according to Laurence Reisman of TCPALM.com. O'Malley: "I think it will happen, and I'm very excited. MLB is the ideal entity to be responsible for Dodgertown because they can do more than anybody else." Historic Dodgertown, which "includes almost 100 acres of baseball and softball fields, 6,500-seat Holman Stadium, clubhouses, meeting rooms and 89 villa-style rooms, is owned by Indian River County." The site, which has "become a year-round training center for youth, high school, college and professional sports teams and officials, is used for tournaments, meetings and conferences." MiLB "leased the facility from the county for $1 a year to start the sports training and camp business" in '09. MiLB had "heavy losses and planned to close the complex" in '11. That is when O'Malley, his sister, Terry Seidler, and former MLBers Hideo Nomo and Chan Ho Park "formed a partnership to take over the lease and run the business." It "eventually made a profit" in '16. O'Malley: "Dodgertown is worth saving and enhancing, and we're getting ready for the next chapter of that. I'm very proud of what we do here, but I want to see it taken to the next level" (TCPALM.com, 10/11).
