NFL, Chargers Have Not Discussed Moving Back To San Diego; Option "Not Realistic"

A Chargers official said that the team leaving L.A. and moving back to San Diego is "not realistic" and is not "on the table in any fashion," according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. NFL Exec VP/Communications Joe Lockhart said, "There are no discussions of returning to San Diego from the league or from the club." A source said that there is "zero pressure from the league for this to happen." Rapoport noted once the team moved, the "focus has been on the Chargers winning new fans and succeeding in L.A." Meanwhile, sources said that San Diego "still doesn't have a stadium option." If it did, the Chargers "likely never would have moved" (NFL.com, 10/8). In N.Y., Gary Myers wrote the NFL "needs to start looking for ways for the Chargers to move back to San Diego." L.A. was "fine without a team for over 20 years and now they have two." The Rams are having a "tough time getting re-established in the market." Myers: "The Chargers are not wanted" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/8). In Boston, Ben Volin wrote, "The sad reality is that while the move from San Diego was a public relations black eye for the team and the league, it's a glaring illustration that regular fans don't mean too much for an NFL team's bottom line." The Chargers will "continue to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in 'national revenue,'" and while attendance "could suffer, they will be able to sell luxury suites, corporate signage, and other high-priced inventory when they move" into the new Inglewood stadium alongside the Rams in '20 (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/8).
