Derek Jeter Reportedly Backtracks On Decision To Fire Four Marlins Front Office Members

Marlins CEO Derek Jeter "personally has reached out to the four esteemed Marlins front office members he reportedly ordered fired" last week and "informed them he didn’t really intend to fire them and that he’d be interested in retaining all four with the team in some unidentified role," according to sources cited by Jon Heyman of FANRAG SPORTS. Jeter reached out to Marlins Special Assistant to the Presidents Andre Dawson, Tony Perez and Jeff Conine and Special Assistant to the Owner Jack McKeon. Sources said that Jeter "told them he wants to keep them with the club" (FANRAGSPORTS.com, 10/3). In Miami, Barry Jackson writes Jeter "appears to be doing damage control or rethinking the situation after bad publicity resulting" from the report that he had asked former Marlins President David Samson to "fire those four special assistants on his behalf." Meanwhile, as part of the sales agreement, former Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria is "responsible for paying off millions owed to Marc DelPiano and three other baseball operations executives fired by Jeter," all of whom are signed through '20 (MIAMI HERALD, 10/5).

AT THE PLATE
: In Tampa, Ashley Gurbal Kritzer reported locally based Liberty Group CEO Punit Shah is now a "minority owner" in the Marlins. He "did not disclose his ownership percentage." Shah: "Extraordinarily humbled, proud and honored to have the privilege of partnering with Derek Jeter as part of his investment group on this historic deal" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/4).
