Indians See MLB's Biggest Attendance Gains For '17; Pirates Have Sharpest Drop

MLB clubs finished the '17 season with an average attendance of 30,042, just off last season’s mark of 30,169, and marking the league’s fourth decline in five seasons. The Dodgers led all clubs for the fifth straight season, averaging 46,492 (+1.7%) fans per game. The Yankees led the AL with an average of 39,835 (+5.3%). However, a May home game vs. the Blue Jays drew a record-low crowd for the new Yankee Stadium (25,566), as well as the team’s smallest crowd since '04. The Indians' second-straight AL Central title and a 22-game win streak helped the team to MLB's largest increase in average attendance, up over 28% at Progressive Field. The Braves, playing at the new SunTrust Park, were up 24% this season. The Rockies and Brewers also saw double-digit growth at the gate, while the Twins (+5.8%) reversed six consecutive seasons of declining attendance at Target Field en route to a Wild Card berth. The Pirates had the largest drop, falling nearly 16% to an average of 23,697. In July, the Giants saw the end to an NL-record 555-game sellout streak.
