Formula E’s Sébastien Buemi Challenged in Virtual Reality Experience

Sébastien Buemi trying to beat his own lap time from the Paris ePrix.

A new virtual reality experience at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Switzerland will have people trying to beat Renault eDams driver Sébastien Buemi’s fastest lap time from last season’s FIA Formula E Paris ePrix.

The experience, created by a company called Virtually Live that aims to enhance the way fans watch professional sports, offers users the opportunity over two laps to compete against Buemi’s time.

The race course was recreated in CGI (Computer Generated Images) by tracking the physical live event from the Paris ePrix and transposing the action into a fully rendered virtual environment.

Are you ready to take on Sebastien Buemi?

The experience stemmed from a partnership between Virtually Live and FIA Formula E Championship to recreate last season’s races live in virtual reality for fans to view as though they had attended in person.

“The level of detail and realism in the Virtually Live Driving Experience is Incredible,” said Buemi in a statement. “This is a really innovative experience, which allows me to engage with my fans, at the same time as giving them the experience of driving my Formula E car in VR around the Paris ePrix track.“

The Buemi experience will be installed at the museum’s Red Bull Media World wing until Jan. 31, 2018.

Other races from the Season 3 ePrix series can be downloaded and viewed in virtual reality from the Virtually Live app. They offer viewers complete freedom of movement to travel anywhere on the track during races, including to a perspective from inside any driver’s car.
