Golf Canada Wants To Bring LPGA Canadian Pacific Women's Open Back To Ottawa

Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum said the organization would be "very supportive" of bringing the LPGA CP Women's Open back to Ottawa, according to Gord Holder of the OTTAWA CITIZEN. The tournament, which wrapped up yesterday with Sung Hyun Park winning by two shots over Mirim Lee at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club, will be "held at the Wascana Country Club in Regina" next year. Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club GM Boris Uvakov said, "It’s a big decision. As much as this (2017) event is so amazing to have and there are so many positive things to come, the course belongs to the members and they would have input into (the decision)." Holder notes the '18 CP Women's Open is the "last scheduled edition of the tournament covered by the current title sponsorship agreement with CP." Applebaum said that there had "already been discussions with CP officials about the future of the tournament" past '18. He added, “They are very committed to events such as this that have wonderful shared experiences for the region, for the fans and for their customers. This event ticks a lot of those boxes” (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 8/28).

HOMETOWN KID: SPORTSNET.ca's Michael Grange wrote Ottawa native Brooke Henderson was the "subject of the crowd's love and affection" during yesterday's final round. Henderson, who finished T-12, "did good, if not great, and thousands of fans wanted her to understand they were appreciative that she provided at least a window through which they can glimpse an even brighter future." There was "hope that should would provide the ultimate storybook week and become the first woman to win her national championship" since '73. Henderson said, "These crowds were so incredible. I just couldn’t imagine this many people coming out to watch me play golf, it’s amazing ... I would have loved to have finished a little bit better for them to give them something a little bit more to cheer about ... they were 100 per cent behind me the whole way." Henderson "got the championship treatment even as she ended up finishing six shots back" (SPORTSNET.ca, 8/27).
