DuPont Unveils ‘Smart’ Athletic Clothing Technology

DuPont Advanced Materials is about to make something “smart” that you might not expect. The company has released a line of stretchable electronic inks and films designed for clothing called DuPont Intexar.

The beauty of Intexar is that it creates an intelligent garment that is flexible and comfortable, according to the company. It’s embedded directly into the fabric with form-fitting circuits meaning the feel is no different than a regular shirt. Don’t worry about destroying it in the wash either; it’s built to withstand up to 100 cycles.

The technology itself provides the user biometric data like heart rate, breathing rate, form awareness and muscle tension.

Last week at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City, DuPont unveiled the two garments powered by Intexar. The first was a Body Plus smart fitness shirt with the capability of collecting data in real-time based on your movements. The second was an OMsignal fitness sports bra and attractive lifestyle bra; both capture real-time ECG, respiratory and physical activity.

“Every athlete – from professional to everyday – can benefit from smart clothing to help boost their performance; but it has to look good and feel good,” DuPont Advanced Materials global business manager Michael Burrows said in a statement. “Intexar is a game-changing technology and will truly move the needle in making smart garments as comfortable as regular fitness clothing.”
