Eurosport, CA Technologies Launch Second Screen App For Cycling Fans

Eurosport has partnered with CA Technologies to launch a new second screen app experience for professional cycling fans. As part of the deal, CA Technologies also becomes the official software partner for Eurosport’s cycling coverage.

The deal means Eurosport, which is owned by Discovery Communications, is offering a live interactive map containing rider data throughout this year’s Grand Tour races, which will be integrated into the company’s existing app and mobile web products. The Grand Tour races refer to the the three biggest races in cycling, the Giro D’Italia, Tour de France and also the Vuelta a España, which kicks off in August.

Fans can now see individual rider GPS and biometric data, which includes their altitude, speed, power, cadence and heart rate, delivered in real-time. The data is also being used in conjunction with Eurosport’s live TV coverage of cycling. The second screen app experience is delivered by CA Technologies’ API Management and App Experience Analytics tools. Meanwhile, the company will also receive on-air, digital and sponsored content advertising as part of the deal.

Peter Hutton, CEO of Eurosport, said in a statement: “We are always looking at ways to enhance and complement our coverage of the world’s greatest sporting events and this partnership and app development ensures we are doing that for cycling’s premium races this year.”

Lauren Flaherty, chief marketing officer of CA Technologies said in the same statement: “While television remains the most popular way to watch major sporting events, second-screen experiences enabled through apps have become increasingly important to viewers.”

“This partnership is great news for cycling fans and provides them with more race information than ever before for the sport’s most prestigious races,” Tour de France stage winner and Eurosport’s lead cycling analyst Juan Antonio Flecha said in a statement. “Data is hugely important to professional riders and teams and now fans can view some of the key information in real-time.”

Currently Eurosport has 236 million subscribers across 94 countries in Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East. It was recently announced that Eurosport had secured rights to broadcast the Tour de France until 2023, an event it has broadcast since 1991.
