New Era, L.A. Fashion Brand Team Up For Caps Honoring Past African-American MLBers

L.A.-based fashion brand Fear of God and New Era have "collaborated to create a $200, limited-edition cap that honors African-American baseball all-stars" from the '80s and '90s, according to Tim O'Shei of the BUFFALO NEWS. Jerry Lorenzo, Fear of God Founder and son of former MLB manager Jerry Manuel, has the support of Andre Dawson, Rickey Henderson, Gary Sheffield, Darryl Strawberry and Dave Winfield. New Era Senior Design Manager Billy Loncar "worked with New Era’s archives team in Buffalo" and with MLB for permission "to create a near exact replica of a New Era fitted cap from that era." The fitted caps are "made with wool," just like caps the players wore. The crown of the cap is lower, while the "undervisor is kelly green." Each cap is "personalized to the player it honors," and is "made in the color of his team." Each cap also has a "side patch highlighting his years" as an MLB All-Star. Company officials "declined to say how many retro caps were made or sold, but the number is presumably small by design." The caps were "only available in Miami" during All-Star Weekend and were "sold for $200 apiece." The logo on "every cap is the same." For example, a Tigers hat has a "'D' that has been transformed into an 'F' for Fear of God." The reason for the Tigers-inspired script is that Detroit is the "franchise that drafted Lorenzo’s dad" in '72. The design collaboration was New Era’s "first-ever with another brand domestically" (BUFFALO NEWS, 7/25).
