Dolphins To Pay For 15,000 Miami-Dade Public School Athletes To Undergo Concussion Testing

The Dolphins will "pay to have approximately 15,000 Miami-Dade public high school athletes undergo baseline concussion tests as well as get other benefits" during the '17-18 school year, according to Armando Salguero of the MIAMI HERALD. The Dolphins are "helping expand the attention to local prep sports by helping fund parts of the University of Miami Countywide Care High School Program for Miami-Dade public schools." The testing will "establish baseline brain parameters for athletes." The Dolphins' sponsorship, which will be announced this week, will also "help pay for counseling, education and a workshop on concussions through a program run by the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute and KiDZ Neuroscience Center." The Dolphins said that they "intend to help fund the program indefinitely" beyond '17 and will "work during the coming year to expand their funding to Broward and Palm Beach County schools." That would be "something of investment in the NFL's future because South Florida high school football teams have historically fed talent into the NFL at rates higher than any other region nationally" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/22).
