MLS All-Star Game To Feature Ref Cam Technology From FOX Sports

FOX Sports is adding Ref Cam technology to its MLS All-Star Game telecast on Aug. 2, providing FS1 viewers with point of view perspectives throughout the match.

The Ref Cam comes from the FOX Sports Lab initiative to test technology after the Big Ten championship football game in December featured referee-worn hats that captured point of view footage for the broadcast.

“I think that worn cameras are going to be a big thing for us in the future,” Michael Davies, FOX Sports ‎Senior Vice President, Field & Technical Operations, had told the SVG Podcast last month.

The Ref Cam for the MLS All- Star Game should be an improvement from the head-worn video camera that was a part of the 2013 games when MLS All-Stars faced A.S. Roma. That camera provided footage that at times could be shaky, and ESPN was able to use it in the telecast.
