Players Pushing WTA To Provide Nurseries With Growing Number Of Mothers On Tour

One of the “biggest revisions that could be on tap” for the WTA Tour in the near future is “making children’s nurseries a mandatory requirement at every tournament,” according to Sandra Harwitt of USA TODAY. The “steady influx of players choosing to combine motherhood with their lives as top-rated pros will make childcare services a popular commodity.” The ATP Tour already “provides nursery facilities since many of their players travel with families.” The latest player to “join the family crowd” is two-time Australian Open champ Victoria Azarenka, while the “most notable soon-to-be mom” is Serena Williams. Azarenka said, “I have been already talking about this point (of needing daycare services at tournaments) to some of the people in WTA. ... The guys do have that luxury of having the nurseries and stuff at every event and I think it’s time for women to have the same benefit. Because I think for women it’s much more important and harder” (USATODAY.com, 7/5). Azarenka said that she has had an “ongoing discussion with Williams about her experiences” with pregnancy. The AP's Zac Boyer noted Azarenka “also spoke this week to Kim Clijsters, whose third child was born in October.” Azarenka: “It wasn't a long conversation, but it's nice to see that some of my colleagues have children and we have just much more in common than just tennis" (AP, 7/5).
