Charlotte Reluctant To Support MLS Stadium; SoccerCity Pushing For Special Election

A day after Mecklenburg County commissioners "gave the city of Charlotte an early August deadline to help fund a new soccer stadium," City Council members "still appear reluctant to participate," according to Harrison & Morrill of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. City council member Julie Eiselt -- a "swing vote on many issues" -- said that she "can't support spending" $43.5M on a new $175M stadium. Eiselt said that one problem is the "location near booming uptown." She has said that she "would like the city to look at other sites where a stadium might provide more economic benefits." Eiselt: "If they want to talk about another neighborhood like the North End, then maybe." Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts "could place the soccer stadium vote on the city's agenda by herself" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 6/14).

NOT GIVING UP HOPE: Even after the San Diego City Council on Monday voted 5-4 against a November special election, SoccerCity project manager Nick Stone yesterday said that his group "would try again at a council hearing" on June 19. Stone said that he and other backers will "continue to work behind the scenes to win support, not only from the council but also organized labor that has pressed for a project labor agreement, which addresses wages and other conditions." In San Diego, Roger Showley notes a week before Monday's vote, the same council majority "voted against funding for a special election" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/14).
