Cavs' Gilbert Set To Talk To Griffin About Future, But Staying With Team No Sure Thing

Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert following last night's defeat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals said he would meet with GM David Griffin "in the next few days" to determine his future with the franchise, according to Joe Vardon of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. Gilbert said, "I feel good about our talent, our personnel, coaching staff, everything." Griffin has a contract that is "set to expire June 30." Gilbert "declined to say if he was confident Griffin would return" and the two have "not spoken about a new contract over the past few days" (CLEVELAND.com, 6/13). ESPN's Brian Windhorst said the "difficult thing" for trying to forecast the Cavs for '17-18 is who will be the team's GM. He said he is "pessimistic" that Griffin will be back with the team. Windhorst: "Whether or not they can work something out with him and Dan Gilbert, I don't know. For whatever reason, Dan Gilbert doesn't seem to value general managers." He added the Cavaliers under Gilbert's ownership have "done nothing but have inconsistent leadership in the coaching box and also the front office." Gilbert "doesn't value stability in those roles.” ESPN’s Michael Wilbon asked, "Who is going to be charged with that responsibility in Cleveland if they have to replace David Griffin, if they can't keep him? Because a whole lot of teams out there would like to have Mr. Griffin. So can Cleveland do that? Are they going to be in position to do that?” (“Mike & Mike,” ESPN Radio, 6/13).
