Golf Canada, RBC Planning Hockey-Themed Par 3 Hole At RBC Canadian Open

Golf Canada and RBC announced the launch of The Rink -- a fan experience taking place during the '17 PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open that will combine golf and hockey. During the championship week, July 24-30, the par-3 7th hole at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., will transform into a rink-style fan experience, complete with hockey boards, a Zamboni, as well as the addition of new rink-side bleachers and viewing decks. Volunteer marshals on the hole will be outfitted in referee uniforms, while rink boards will outline the hole from tee to green, replacing traditional roping (Golf Canada). CBSSPORTS.com's Kyle Porter wrote The Rink is a "cool sideshow to this event." It "doesn't touch too much of the actual play, but gives fans (especially kids) something to look forward to" (CBSSPORTS.com, 6/10). GOLFCHANNEL.com's Jason Crook noted some TV cameras will be "positioned behind the green, looking back toward the tee, so viewers at home can enjoy the unique scenery, and a $1,000 donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada will be made for every birdie made on the hole during the tournament" (GOLFCHANNEL.com, 6/10).
