NBC Previews Documentary On Ted Turner's America's Cup Win 40 Years Ago

NBC Sports last night previewed its upcoming documentary, “Courageous,” at a private event at the N.Y. Yacht Club in Manhattan, with media mogul Ted Turner, the film’s featured subject, attending. The 45-minute documentary, premiering June 17 on NBC after the network’s coverage of the ’17 America’s Cup Finals, chronicles Turner’s sweep of the ’77 America’s Cup Final skippering the boat also named Courageous, as well as his outsized personality that challenged many of sailing’s long-held traditions. “Looking last year at the calendar for 2017, knowing that we were coming up on an anniversary year for the ’77 America’s Cup, we knew this was a great opportunity to tell this story,” said NBC Sports Group Senior VP/Original Productions & Creative Mark Levy. “Ultimately, this is a character story.” The 78-year-old Turner has fought atrial fibrillation in recent years, but he appears in the film. Turner remains active in several endeavors, including raising bison, his Ted’s Montana Grill line of restaurants and supporting environmental causes. “I’m not keeping the same work schedule. And I have an illness, too, and it’s an exhausting illness. So I don’t have the strength to work the same way I used to,” Turner said. “I’ve cut back some, but I’m there when they need me.” Turner, the former Braves owner, said he was not happy with the team's move to Cobb County, Ga., and he has yet to visit SunTrust Park. “To me, they’ll always be the Atlanta Braves, not the Marietta Braves,” Turner said.
