FS1, Fox Lead Way At Sports Emmy Awards, With NBC's Olympic Coverage Also Recognized

FS1 and Fox "topped the leader board at the 38th Annual Sports Emmy Awards" last night at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in N.Y., according to Debbie Emery of THE WRAP. Fox and FS1 were "aided to nine and seven awards respectively thanks to coverage of the historic World Series run" by the Cubs last year. HBO and NBC "each won five accolades," with ESPN, CBS and MLB Network "taking home four each." Late Turner Sports broadcaster Craig Sager was "honored a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Personality." Longtime broadcaster Brent Musburger was also presented with the Sports Lifetime Achievement Award (THEWRAP.com, 5/9). Among the other individual winners were Bob Costas (studio host), Mike Emrick (play-by-play), Charles Barkley (studio analyst) and Bill Raftery (sports event analyst) (THE DAILY). DEADLINE.com's Erik Pedersen noted among FS1's wins was "MLB on Fox" in the Outstanding Studio Show -- Limited Run category. NBC's "SNF" took home the Outstanding Live Sports Series award, and the net's coverage of last summer's Rio Games also collected the "most trophies for a program" with four (DEADLINE.com, 5/9).

WITH FRIENDS LIKE THIS....: Barkley was congratulated on TNT's "Inside the NBA" last night for his win, and TNT’s Kenny Smith presented him with a bottle of champagne. He then took another bottle out from under the broadcast desk, causing Barkley to say, "I’m going to kill you (if you pour that on me).” Smith said he was “just going to celebrate” and then proceeded to dump the bottle over Barkley’s head, yelling, “You did it, Chuck! … You never won a championship but you won some Emmys" (“Inside the NBA,” TNT, 5/10). Meanwhile, HBO's Bill Simmons tweeted, "Congrats to my @PTI friends for winning a 2nd Sports Emmy last night even though the Sports Emmys are stupid + you should have 8-10 by now" (TWITTER.com, 5/10).
