The world’s only synchronized global race Wings for Life World Run broke a social media record Sunday. While simultaneously running in 24 different locations, a specific group in Sunrise, Fla. used 60 on-demand Snapchat Geofilters as part of the race.
Together, they set the world record for longest consecutive number of Snapchat Geofilters used for a single event, unlocking a new Geofilter with each additional mile reached throughout the race. Over 155,000 runners participated in the unique format, which includes no finish line.
A Catcher Car gives the runners a head start and then chases them at a previously-determined speed.
The race ends for a runner when or she is passed by the Catcher Car, with the last person still running considered the winner.
Prior to this weekend’s race, the previous record for on-demand Geofilters was set in March at the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, where more than 40 on-demand location-based Snapchat Geofilters were used by the 24,000-plus athletes.
In 2014, the Wings for Life World Run launched to benefit the not-for-profit Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation, an organization that’s devoted to finding a cure for spinal cord injury. The synchronized race raised over $1 million for research.
