UMass officials have "broken off talks with the Kraft Group" regarding the building of a stadium for the Revolution near the Boston campus "amid concerns from some local elected officials about its potential impact on the area," according to Jon Chesto of the BOSTON GLOBE. The search had "involved talks with UMass officials" about property the "university owns." UMass VP/Communications Jeff Cournoyer on Thursday said the project "doesn’t appear feasible at this point.” Chesto notes the Krafts and UMass were "discussing a scenario in which the Kraft Group would enter into a long-term lease for the site, with the team ownership privately financing the project." But the two sides "couldn’t come to an agreement on a price with the Boston Teachers Union, which owns an adjacent property that was needed for the stadium." While the union property was "considered important to the deal, discussions also involved using just the 20-acre Bayside Expo property." Local officials also "worried that traffic could overwhelm the already congested area" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/28). UMass officials on Thursday said that they would "now turn to the community to help [determine] what to do with the site" (BOSTON HERALD, 4/28).
