Big 12 Revenue Increases For Second Straight Year; Helped By Bowl Game Appearances

Helped primarily by a "healthy jump in its take from football bowl games," the Big 12 had more than $313M in total revenue for FY '15-16, according to Steve Berkowitz of USA TODAY. The new revenue figure made '16 the "second consecutive year in which the conference has increased annual revenue" by more than $40M. The figure also means that the Big 12 has "nearly doubled its annual revenue" since '12, when it reported $159.5M. The conference "reported that its revenue from bowl games grew" to just over $114.5M in '16, up from $74.5M in '15. Big 12 Assistant Commissioner for Communications Bob Burda said that the increased bowl revenue was "due to the conference having seven bowl teams" during '15, including Oklahoma in the CFP semifinals and Oklahoma State in the Sugar Bowl. The Big 12’s TV revenue grew by just $8M in '16. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby's compensation "remained largely unchanged for a second consecutive year." He was credited with $2,659,069M in total compensation for the '15 calendar year -- an "increase of just over $70,000 compared [to] what was reported for him" for '14 (USA TODAY, 4/27).
