Leonsis-Backed OTT Service Monumental Sports Network "Doing Better Than Expected"

Monumental Sports Network VP & GM Zach Leonsis said that the four-month-old OTT service is "doing better than expected," though he "can't say how many subscribers it has," according to Noah Lanard of the WASHINGTONIAN. Monumental Sports & Entertainment owns the network, as well as the Wizards and Capitals, though viewers "can't find those teams' games on MSN." Instead, live games come from the WNBA Mystics, minor league teams and high school basketball programs. This "mix of programming" costs subscribers $13 a month. Meanwhile, Leonsis said that MSN is "more than just a streaming site." For example, it "offers subscribers events like a mixology party" with Wizards F Otto Porter Jr. MSN also airs an interview show hosted by former Duke basketball player and White House aide Reggie Love called, "The Walk & Talk with Reggie Love," which Leonsis hopes can "extend MSN's reach beyond sports." Lanard noted MSN has shows like "The Indoor Game," which "follows the creation" of the DC Valor, an expansion AFL team owned by MS&E Chair Ted Leonsis. There is also "The Making of a Wizard Girl," which "tracks the NBA dance team's auditions and practices." The episodes "include repackaged press conferences and a tour of a sponsor’s healthcare facility." However, Lanard wrote maintaining an audience with that mix "may be difficult" (WASHINGTONIAN.com, 2/24).
