Skiing Magazine Shutting Down Print Publication To Focus On Digital, Television

Boulder-based Skiing Magazine is "shuttering its print publication and folding its adventure-focused content into a revamped version of its sister, Ski Magazine," according to Jason Blevins of the DENVER POST. For years, Skiing has been the "winter-adventure magazine, with a focus on younger skiers who live for the sport." Ski Magazine has been "more family friendly, with an eye toward the aging baby boomers who grew the ski industry and seek a little more luxe in their ski vacation." Active Interest Media President & CEO Andy Clurman, whose company publishes Ski Magazine, said that the plan is to "marry the two brands into a single, snowy voice." Clurman: "We are going for the bigger tent approach." Blevin noted the final edition of Skiing has "already published," but while the print magazine "might be fading away, the brand is not." Clurman said that he is "keeping Skiing’s staff," including the magazine's first female editor-in-chief Kimberly Beekman. There is now a "renewed focus on digital video, television and online storytelling, which will carry the Skiing brand." The company’s "revamped skiingmag.com website will remain intact" (DENVERPOST.com, 2/9). OUTSIDE magazine's Marc Peruzzi noted for most of its long history, Skiing "offered a unique and, at times, vital take on the sport." Peruzzi: "The magazine had a voice, but more important, it gave a voice to skiers. And that's all anyone ever asked of Skiing" (OUTSIDEONLINE.com, 2/13).
