Weekend Plans With Dolphins Dir of Business Development Joel Adams: The Long Road Back

Dolphins Dir of Business Development JOEL ADAMS’ life took a frightening turn last summer when doctors found a tumor in his brain, and then shortly after a lump in his chest. Adams had Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer affecting his immune system. After numerous rounds of chemo, Adams put cancer in the rearview mirror later that fall. Now the 29-year-old is cancer free, and this weekend represents a validation of the strength he needed to still be here today, participating in the 7th annual Dolphins Cancer Challenge bike race Saturday. The Dolphins have a team riding alongside him. Adams: “I’ve been given so much by those who support me. I’m expecting Saturday to be pretty emotional."

FAMILY SUPPORT: On Friday my parents are flying in from California to ride with me. My girlfriend and I will go out to dinner with them and then ideally we’ll load up on some carbs. To be honest, I haven’t prepared as well as I should have for the race. Last Sunday I rode for 10 miles around Ft. Lauderdale and was pretty sore. But we’re going to get it done. Saturday is an early morning -- we have to get to the race well ahead of time. After the race we’re going to the COUNTING CROWS concert at Hard Rock Stadium, then probably out to dinner again. Traditionally we like to go out on a boat ride in Miami, nothing big but will just serve as relaxation from the race. We might go see a movie, too. Sunday I’ll take my folks to the airport, then probably go to the beach, assuming we’re not still recovering.

TIME TO REFLECT: With everything I’ve gone through this past year I’ve really gotten the chance to see the overwhelming support I have not only from my family but also from what I call my family here in Florida “Team Joel.” The support I’ve gotten from the Dolphins has been incredible, and to be able to give back to cancer research by participating in the race this weekend and also to the people who have been there for me means so much.

EATS & HOBBIES: Since I moved to Miami almost three years ago I’ve always liked this place called S3 on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale. Really nice restaurant. When I can do a steakhouse I love Prime 112 in South Beach. TV-wise, I really like “HOUSE OF CARDS” and also “HOMELAND” on Showtime. Cooking-wise, I’m a little limited but I can make some mean breakfast sandwiches. When I get going I can throw in some ham, tomato, eggs, avocados and onions. Unfortunately, I can’t have them every day but weekends are a good time for those.
