The Texans "will move training camp" to the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, marking the "first time they will not have camp at their Houston Methodist Training Center across the street from NRG Stadium," according to John McClain of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. The dates for training camp and times for practices "will be announced later." Texans Owner Bob McNair last week said that "one reason the Texans were moving to West Virginia is because of better weather." McClain notes the temperature is "a lot cooler than in Houston during training camp in August." The Saints were the "first team to train" at the Greenbrier, having had camp there the last three years (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 2/10). It is "not known whether the Texans will have the same three-year deal as did the Saints." Details are "still being worked out" (Beckley REGISTER-HERALD, 2/9). In Houston, Jack Witthaus noted the Texans previously would "hold some of their practices outside at the training center, where the average high is around 95 degrees when training camp starts in late July." The "average high" at the Greenbrier during that time is 82 degrees (BIZJOURNALS.com, 2/9).
WHO DAT ON THE MOVE: The Saints announced Thursday that training camp will be held at the team's practice facility in Metairie, La. In New Orleans, Herbie Teope notes the Saints "returned to the Metairie training facility late in training camp the past three years before closing out preseason action." The team previously "held training camp in Metairie with open practices to the public" from '03-05 and from '09-13 (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 2/10). Also in New Orleans, Larry Holder writes under the header, "Saints' Only Right Move Was Keeping Training Camp In Metairie." It was a "given the Saints weren't headed back" to the Greenbrier. Three straight seasons of 7-9 records "forced" Owner Tom Benson's hand. He "wasn't shelling out any more money for mediocre returns." Training at the "high-priced resort became an easy target for fans to point to when dissecting why the Saints haven't been a success on the field." The Saints "pondered moving camp to a spot in Kentucky and maybe a return" to Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., where the Saints trained from '06-08. But staying home "provides the team with everything it needs and then some" (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 2/10).
