NC Sports Association Urges Immediate Repeal Of HB2 To Avoid Losing More NCAA Events

The North Carolina Sports Association yesterday sent a letter to the state's House of Representatives and General Assembly "urging an immediate repeal" of HB2, according to Scott Gleeson of USA TODAY. The law "led to the removal of all the NCAA's championship events" in '17 and prompted the NBA to move its All-Star Game out of Charlotte. The letter, written by Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance Exec Dir Scott Dupree, noted the state is "on the brink of losing all NCAA Championship events for six consecutive years" through '22. The NCSA represents 27 counties that "recruit and promote major sporting events" (USATODAY.com, 2/6). In Raleigh, Luke DeCock writes, "Time's up. By the end of next week, it will be too late." If HB2 "isn’t repealed in the next 12 days, while the North Carolina General Assembly is in session, the NCAA is going to extend its ban on events in North Carolina for another five years." DeCock: "The ACC will follow. And so will countless amateur and youth sporting organizations" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 2/7).

NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE: In San Jose, Daniel Mano notes California’s public colleges and universities "cannot travel to Kansas schools because of a religious freedom law in that state." The new California state law has "led to Cal women’s basketball exiting discussions of playing Kansas in coming years." The two schools had "reportedly been in preliminary talks about scheduling a home-and-home series" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 2/7).
