Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan Makes It Clear He Opposes President Trump's Immigration Ban

Jaguars Owner SHAHID KHAN made it clear Saturday that he was opposed to PRESIDENT TRUMP's executive order on immigration and said that he had been "heartened on Friday when a federal judge in Seattle temporarily blocked the president’s immigration order," according to Ken Belson of the N.Y. TIMES. Khan is the "only Muslim among the principal owners of NFL teams." Khan said it was "kind of a sobering time" for somebody like him, in part because he had expected Trump to moderate his views on immigration and Muslims once in office. But Khan said that he "hoped the courts would provide a bulwark against the president’s actions." He said he understood NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL’s decision "not to make a public statement, to avoid the appearance of 'grandstanding' on the president’s action." Instead, Khan said that the league "should see how the issue plays out in court." Khan: "We have to look at it based on what can we do to make a difference. And right now, there are enough forces in power and play that we have to see how this thing ends up" (N.Y. TIMES, 2/5). Khan said while Trump’s travel ban was "one step backward," he was hopeful for "two steps forward." Khan: "You can’t confuse safety with religion or national origin. That’s the point. But I have enough faith that things are going to eventually turn out well." Khan said that he and his wife, Ann, are "'registered hard-core Republicans,' and he 'very much loved' Trump’s economic ideas" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 2/5).
