SEC Revenue In FY '16 Jumps 21% To $639M, With Each University Getting $40.4M

The SEC generated over $639M in total revenue for the fiscal year that ended Aug. 31, 2016, an increase of more than 21% from the previous year, according to James Crepea of AL.com. The total revenue includes $584.2M "divided among the 14 member schools," of which $565.9M was "distributed from the conference." Each SEC school received over $40.4M from the conference, up from $32.7M. The total revenue distribution amount is comprised of revenue generated from TV agreements, bowl games, the CFP, SEC Football Championship, SEC Men's Basketball Tournament, NCAA Championships and a "supplemental surplus distribution." The distribution amount "does not include" approximately $1M of "academic enhancement payments paid directly from the NCAA and divided equally among the 14 SEC schools" (AL.com, 2/2). In Georgia, Jason Butt notes conference schools have seen revenue distribution "rise quite a bit" since the launch of the SEC Network in '14 (Macon TELEGRAPH, 2/3). USA TODAY's Steve Berkowitz notes the SEC is the first conference to release its tax records for FY '16 and its revenue distributions "swamp those of even other Power Five conferences" (USA TODAY, 2/3).
