Milwaukee Bucks Owner Wesley Edens Confirms Formation Of eSports Team

(Courtesy of Bucks/Instagram)

After an ESPN report surfaced last month that Milwaukee Bucks owner Wesley Edens would be buying into eSports, the news became official today, according to Darren Rovell.

Edens confirmed to Rovell that his eSports team would compete in League of Legends under the name FlyQuest. As ESPN reported last week, the team will begin competing in the North American League Championship Series on Jan. 20.

With his venture into eSports, Edens — who is also Co-chairman of Fortress Investment Group — joins a handful of other team owners who have invested in the sport. Last September, Golden State Warriors owner Peter Guber and Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis were among those to acquire the eSports franchise Team Liquid under a new ownership group called aXiomatic while during the same week, Memphis Grizzlies Co-owner and Co-Executive Chairman Steve Kaplan increased his stake in gaming team Immortals.

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross stated their continued interest and pursuit of eSports teams in November at the Michigan Sport Business Conference.
