NHL Teams Limited To Only Home, Road Jerseys Next Season As Part Of Adidas Deal

NHL teams beginning next season will be "permitted to have only home and road jerseys" as adidas "takes over for Reebok as the official outfitter of NHL uniforms," according to sources cited by Michael Russo of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. There will be "no third jerseys, in order to make the initial implementation of new sweaters easier." Meanwhile, the Wild are "in the midst of deciding whether to go with red or green home sweaters." If the team "chooses green, which sounds probable, the jersey likely will be slightly redesigned from the current third jersey" (STARTRIBUNE.com, 1/9). YAHOO SPORTS' Greg Wyshynski reported it is "unlikely" there will be "wholesale uniform changes for many NHL teams during this first wave" of adidas jerseys. A source said that the Panthers and Maple Leafs "'jumped the gun' by a year" in order to "get their new sweaters out as soon as possible." Those teams were "expected to wait until" the adidas changeover. There are 18 teams with alternate jerseys this season (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 1/9). THE HOCKEY NEWS' Jared Clinton wrote it is an "especially tough break for several of the league’s teams who’ve just recently introduced their alternates." Since the start of the '15-16 season, the Bruins, Ducks, Flames, Avalanche, Oilers, Islanders, Sharks and Capitals "have introduced new alternates." Some of those -- like the Ducks’ orange "Mighty Ducks" throwback, Flames’ white "C" and Capitals’ retro-style jersey -- "have become instant favorites" (THEHOCKEYNEWS.com, 1/9).
