Cleveland Cavaliers Unveil Paper Virtual Championship Ring Due To Silicone Band ‘Flaw’

The Cleveland Cavaliers have released printable paper rings that activate an augmented reality championship ring-wearing experience for all fans who download the new version of the app. The update came after the team disappointed some fans with its first attempt at having them virtually try on championship rings.

The Nike silicone bands that were given away to fans on opening night in celebration of the Cavaliers’ first NBA championship will no longer activate the augmented reality experience since some of them never worked in the first place.

“Unfortunately, the silicone bands proved too problematic to activate based on a design flaw not identified until after the rings were distributed to fans,” read a statement from the team.

The paper rings are available to anyone who prints out the PDF file and cuts out the Nike-branded paper bands that can be connected around the finger with a piece of tape. The Cavaliers’ app that was updated Tuesday now features the ring-wearing activation link on the homepage, and the modified experience can be triggered with the app reading the geometric pattern on the ring.

Fans who waited so long for a championship and then a little longer for the virtual ring to work could finally share their pictures on social media.
