Something To Hold On To: Chicago Papers Print 1 Million Extra Copies Of Cubs WS Issues

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times "printed about a million extra copies" of their Thursday editions that heralded the Cubs' Game 7 World Series win, "triple their normal output," according to Chris Isidore of CNN MONEY. Chicago Tribune Media Group Product Supervisor Stew Erskine said, "This is by far the most copies we've ever added. We printed a lot of extra copies for Obama's win in 2008 and for the Blackhawks championships. But we've never seen anything like this." Erskine said that the Tribune "added 400,000 copies on top of its normal run of 300,000 papers," while the Sun-Times "added 550,000 copies on top of its normal 150,000." However, it "wasn't enough," as copies "were selling quickly" (MONEY.CNN.com, 11/3). In Chicago, Ally Marotti noted the Tribune "fired up the presses again Thursday afternoon," printing another 300,000 copies which brings the total to about 1 million. The Tribune "set up tables in the lobby of Tribune Tower" before 8:00am CT to "sell copies of the paper, replica press plates and other merchandise." Sun-Times Publisher & Editor Jim Kirk in an email said that the paper printed "about eight times the normal amount." The Sun-Times also "set up a pop-up shop in the Merchandise Mart to sell the paper and take book orders" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 11/3).

UP ALL NIGHT

SI Editorial Dir Chris Stone said that SI Exec Editor Stephen Cannella and staff worked until 5:00am ET Thursday to "get the issue to press -- 5 1/2 hours after the final out" (N.Y. POST, 11/4).
