Rolling Stone Quietly Deletes Column On NBA Treatment Of Derrick Rose Rape Trial

Rolling Stone on Friday "quietly removed an online article about the NBA and domestic violence" two days after it was published, according to Peter Sterne of POLITICO. The piece, titled "Why Derrick Rose Rape Trial May Wreck NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's Legacy" and written by Beejoli Shah, examined how Silver has "disciplined different basketball players accused of domestic violence and specifically noted his silence" regarding Knicks G Derrick Rose. A source said that after the piece was published, the NBA "contacted RollingStone.com sports editor Jason Diamond to dispute a number of assertions in the piece." After making changes to the piece, Rolling Stone "decided to delete the article altogether." The magazine also "killed a forthcoming article from Shah about the NBA." Rolling Stone "published a note to readers last night about the removal of the post" where it acknowledged the story had "substantial flaws" (POLITICO.com, 10/17). In N.Y., John Healy notes Shah in the story contrasted the Rose situation to "how the NBA handled criminal cases, specifically the domestic violence cases" of former NBAer Jeffrey Taylor and Kings G Darren Collison, who were "both suspended after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges." Shah also "argued that Rose should be subject to a mental health evaluation and accused the league of not investigating Collison's case despite his suspension." Rolling Stone yesterday "began its trial for a defamation suit against them for a discredited story regarding a sexual assault" at the Univ. of Virginia (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/18).
