Sources: NHL Considering Playing Outdoor Game In West Point At Michie Stadium

The NHL is "considering an outdoor game" at the U.S. Army's Michie Stadium, and proximity would make the Rangers the host, according to sources cited by Elliotte Friedman of SPORTSNET.ca. The Panthers and the Las Vegas expansion franchise have ownership with "ties to the army that would undoubtedly want to play" at the venue (SPORTSNET.ca, 10/9). In N.Y., Larry Brooks notes the Rangers would "all but certainly be involved in any outdoor game" but would "have to be the visiting team, as they were for games at Yankee Stadium against the Devils and Islanders" in January '14. MSG's agreement with the city "regarding its tax exempt status precludes the Rangers from playing a home game" outside of the arena (N.Y. POST, 10/10). On Long Island, Steve Zipay notes Michie Stadium seats 38,000, and "anyone who has attended a college game there can vouch for the picturesque setting and the red-white-and-blue atmosphere." The game "certainly would be good publicity for the Las Vegas franchise" (NEWSDAY, 10/10). The Panthers played the Devils this weekend in a preseason game at West Point's Tate Rink (THE DAILY).
