USTA Chief Exec of Community Tennis Kurt Kamperman said it is "within the realm of possibility'' that the ATP/WTA Miami Open in Key Biscayne could move at some point in the future to the new USTA National Campus in Orlando, according to the AP. He said that if the owners of the Miami Open "'wanted to move' the event, there would be room to build a suitable stadium." A court decision last year "prevents the Miami Open from upgrading its complex, and a lawyer for the tournament has said moving the event is all but certain." USTA President Katrina Adams said, "We want to keep the tournament in the U.S.'' (AP, 9/8). Kamperman said of moving the event, “If the owners of the Key Biscayne tournament wanted to move -- needed to move -- we know that they are land-locked and they’ve had real challenges in expanding that. If they wanted to move and they wanted to keep that event in the States, and we would sure hope they would want to keep that event in the States, moving up the street to Orlando would be a great opportunity.” USA TODAY's Nick McCarvel notes the Miami Open is an ATP Masters 1000 level event and a WTA Premier Mandatory event, the "largest-scale combined event below the Grand Slam level" (USATODAY.com, 9/9).
