IBM’s Watson And This Irish Sports Science Startup Want To Help Elite Athletes Perform At Their Best

“Test results and numbers are informative, but are of limited use without context.”

That is the philosophy of Orreco, a science-based athlete training company that works to improve athletic and coaching performances. Last year, IBM Watson teamed up with Orreco to use data and cognitive computing to help top athletes optimize their overall performance.

To find this data, Orreco studies and analyzes a blood sample of the athlete to find out what exactly it is they need to help their body improve. Orreco, which was founded back in 2010, has already helped athletes in numerous leagues, such as the NBA, MLB, UK Premier League, pro golfers and F1 teams. The analyses of these samples goes into IBM Watson assisting coaches with helping their athletes pinpoint exactly what they need to do perform at their best.

“Orreco is working with Watson to reimagine competitive training. Every factor counts when a coach is training a team or athlete. And with Orreco and Watson, coaches can analyze every bit of data to customize training regimens for each athlete. Scientific studies, performance records, sleep schedules, weather, diet, and even unstructured data like handwritten notes, can all be analyzed to ensure athletes have the best program to optimize their performance,” IBM said in a statement.

IBM is now showing an ad campaign that will air for two weeks during the US Open on NBC, ESPN and other channels that Orreco founder Brian Moore says will “reflect our long-term ambition to make elite-level analysis and support available to weekend and amateur athletes”.
