ESPN's John McEnroe Pauses Association With Raonic To Avoid Any Conflict Of Interest

ESPN analyst John McEnroe said that he "won't work with Milos Raonic" as a coach during the U.S. Open, as ESPN carries most of the event on its networks, according to the AP. McEnroe served as a "coaching consultant" for Raonic prior to Wimbledon, where he served as an announcer for ESPN. He did not call any of Raonic's matches "until the final," though his presence in the booth during Raonic's loss to Andy Murray drew heavy criticism on social media. The U.S. Open begins today, and ESPN VP/Production Jamie Reynolds had said that he was "still comfortable with that arrangement as long as the network was transparent about the relationships." However, McEnroe on Friday said it was "best that we stop right now doing what we're doing" (AP, 8/27). In Montreal, Stu Cowan notes McEnroe at Wimbledon was "running from the TV booth to the practice courts to work with Raonic" in what was a "bizarre situation" (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 8/29). McEnroe "admitted his media commitments 'ended up becoming an issue at Wimbledon,' but added he was 'open to the possibility' of a second coaching stint should Raonic seek it" (BBC.com, 8/28).
