Univ. Of Hawaii To Pocket More Than $400K For Game Against Cal In Australia

The Univ. of Hawaii is "projecting to net $407,522" for its Aug. 26 football game against Cal in Australia, according to Ferd Lewis of the HONOLULU STAR-ADVERTISER. The inaugural Sydney College Football Cup "will be played in the 83,500-seat ANZ Stadium" and will be "shown on ESPN." If the financial projections hold up, it would be "one of the largest paydays" for a UH road game. UH AD David Matlin said that the return “'won’t be as high' as what UH realized from last year’s games at Ohio State and Wisconsin, but 'will definitely be one of our better ones.'” UH last year "received a guarantee" of $1.2M to play at OSU and $1.1M for the trip to UW, "realizing more than $500,000 from each game after paying airfare, hotels, meals and ground transportation." The Sydney trip "will mark UH’s longest modern-day road trip in terms of both days (6.5) and mileage (more than 10,000 round trip) as well as largest traveling squad" (HONOLULU STAR-ADVERTISER, 8/16).
