Medal Stand: Opening Ceremony Delivers, While Team USA's Outfits Do Not

Each day during the Olympics, THE DAILY offers our take on the business performances of some of the people, sponsors, broadcasters and other entities around Rio.

GOLD: RIO'S OPENING CEREMONY -- Without breaking the bank, Rio’s creative directors -- Fernando Meirelles, Daniela Thomas and Andrucha Waddington -- and choreographer Deborah Colker delivered a stunning celebration of Brazil's history, its people and culture that morphed into one of the bigger Olympic parties in recent memory.

SILVER: POWERADE -- Powerade’s inspirational Olympic-themed spot featuring U.S. boxer Shakur Stevenson pulls no punches and gives us goose bumps every time we see it. Wieden + Kennedy came up with a gem on the latest chapter of the brand’s “Just A Kid” campaign.

BRONZE: GINNY THRASHER -- The 19-year-old fresh-faced U.S. shooter won the first Gold Medal of the Rio Games, pulling off an upset in the women’s 10-meter air rifle event Saturday morning just days before starting her sophomore year at West Virginia.

TIN: RALPH LAUREN -- How is it that France looked more like Americans at the Opening Ceremony than Team USA? Were we supposed to be wearing the Russian flag on our shirts? Just once, we wish the official Team USA outfitter would stop making U.S. athletes look like the preppy villain from a John Hughes movie.
