HBO's Bill Simmons Blames Knicks' James Dolan For Team's Continued Struggles

HBO's Bill Simmons during last night's episode of "Any Given Wednesday," discussed the woes of the Knicks following the team's recent trade for oft-injured Bulls G Derrick Rose. Simmons said, "The Knicks have only two championships in 70 years partly because they can’t stop landing famous stars well after they’ve peaked. If the Knicks were a celebrity, they’d be dating Paris Hilton -- right now. They traded for Derrick Rose last week which was about 200 weeks too late, but ever since I became an NBA fan, the Knicks have been trotting out the gotcha-too-late all-stars." Simmons: "Bumbling billionaire James Dolan inherited the franchise and everything went to hell. … Two years ago, they gave Phil Jackson $60 million to work 22 hours a week. If Dolan wanted a celebrity GM who stopped trying last decade, he should have just hired Spike Lee. Sadly, Knicks fans are way smarter than their owner." Simmons, noting Dolan's musical interests, said, "If Dolan thinks fronting a jazz band is a brilliant idea, then he will definitely overpay a free-agent center who peaked five years ago, right? ... So here’s my advice for New York fans: Don’t let Dolan clog your salary cap with a broken-down [free agent C Dwight Howard]. Picket his office, buy some billboards, mobilize on Twitter; you can even distract him by getting his crummy jazz band booked for Milwaukee Summerfest” (“Any Given Wednesday,” HBO, 6/29).
