Maple Leafs Consider Opposing Snoop Dogg's Marijuana Logo Trademark Application

MLSE has "bought itself time to decide whether to formally oppose" rapper Snoop Dogg's latest trademark application for a logo for his marijuana company, Leafs by Snoop, according to Alicja Siekierska of the GLOBE & MAIL. The rapper "filed a trademark application for Leafs by Snoop with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Nov. 17." According to the application, the trademark -- which is featured on Snoop Dogg’s marijuana product line sold in Colorado -- "includes the words Leafs by Snoop 'presented on three lines and superimposed over a golden leaf design.'" NHL Legal Counsel Kelley Lynch "filed a 90-day request for extension of time" on behalf of MLSE to investigate Snoop Dogg’s trademark registration (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/23). In Toronto, Kevin McGran notes MLSE does not "want to roll with it." There are some legal "pot holes MLSE will have to overcome, like convincing anyone that marijuana and a hockey team have anything in common." They will have to "come with more than half-baked arguments" (TORONTO STAR, 6/23).
