WNBA Lynx Turn Losses Into Profit By Winning Championships, Changing Business Model

The WNBA Lynx six years ago were "coming off 10 straight years of financial losses," but after three championships, the team "has now posted four consecutive years of profit," according to Nick Halter of the MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL BUSINESS JOURNAL. Lynx President Chris Wright said, "We sold almost a thousand new season tickets after we won the first title, and our business model changed basically overnight." Halter notes the Lynx appear to be "in great shape because of their own success and because the league has scored a couple major contracts in recent memory." The team ranked "second in the league in attendance last year, averaging 9,364 fans a game." Following last year's WNBA championship, Wright said that the team "scored 800 new full-season ticket memberships." The Lynx "use a measurement called WAL," which combines the number of people in the market "who watch, attend or listen to a Lynx game during the season." Wright said that six years ago, that number "was around 55,000." Last season, it "was 600,000" (MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL BUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/20 issue).
