Facility Notes

In Minneapolis, Rochelle Olson notes a contemporary sculpture "evocative of a Vikings horn will have a home on the west plaza" of the Vikings' new U.S. Bank Stadium. The installation, commissioned by Minneapolis-based medical device company Medtronic, "is yet another large structure on the plaza named for" the company. The sculpture, called "The Horn," likely "won't be completed until later in August." It will "be 107 feet long, 25 feet high, 30 feet wide and weigh more than 38 tons." The sculpture "won't be as large as the nearby Vikings' ship that will house the commemorative pavers purchased by fans and feature a curved video board as the mast" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/11).

BUBBLE BOYS: In DC, Liz Clarke notes Redskins officials "vowed to re-inflate" the teams' indoor practice facility after it "buckled under the high winds and record snowfall that Winter Storm Jonas dumped on the region in January." But more than three months later the team "has no bubble as its current rookie class convenes for minicamp this week." The remnants of the inflated shell "have been carted off, too damaged to be re-inflated." Redskins officials "cited the 'threat of inclement weather' in announcing they're rescheduling Friday's media session." With lightning forecast on Friday, "there's no guarantee the team can safely conduct a full on-the-field workout." Redskins Senior VP/Communications Tony Wyllie said that a new indoor facility will "be in place this summer" (WASHINGTON POST, 5/11).

CLUB MUSIC: ESPN.com's Arash Markazi wrote Hyde Lounge is "known for its decadent nightspots in Hollywood, South Beach and Las Vegas but has never opened anything quite like the 18,000-square-foot club" inside the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The city with the new venue "not only has its newest attraction, but one that has finally gained the attention of teams and leagues that had for years viewed the city as nothing more than an exhibition game pit stop at best and a wasteland with legalized gambling at worst." MGM Resorts Senior VP/Entertainment Rick Arpin said, "We wanted to be accommodating to the NHL and NBA. We're building this for the long term. Who knows? The NBA could be 10-20 years down the road, but in the interim we want to host games" (ESPN.com, 5/10).
