Weekend Plans With The Mountain West's Judy Willson: Dinner, Movies, Brunch, Church

For Mountain West Conference Associate Dir of Communications JUDY WILLSON, this time of year is heavy on weekend travel. In addition to her duties with the Colorado Springs-based conference, she is also College Sports Information Directors of America President. “I do not have many weekends free right now,” she said. “I just got back from the NCAA convention in San Antonio last Friday night. I leave again next Friday for some leadership meetings in Florida. And then I go straight to Indianapolis from there for some meetings with the NCAA. I have my travel figured out from now until the middle of June. I have eleven trips between now and June 16.”

JACK OF ALL TRADES: I am making plans with friends for Friday night to have dinner and a movie. Saturdays are kind of a work day for me. Since it is basketball season, I keep an eye on our women’s games. We have five this Saturday. I also cover volleyball and baseball. We live stream those events and I keep an eye on making sure things are going smoothly. My goal this year has been to not do anything work related before noon. If the temperature gets above 40 degrees, I will go for a walk outside. But if it is below that here in Colorado, I will probably get on the treadmill. I love Mimi’s Café for Saturday morning brunch and mimosas. It is probably not a good way to start your day when you are keeping track of games.

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY: From 8:00am until noon on Sundays, I am at church. I teach kindergarten and first-grade Sunday school, which includes about 10 kids. It reminds me of what priorities need to be. I also sing with our ensemble at church. After church, I try to not do any work for another couple hours and have lunch with friends or just relax for a little bit. I like to be disconnected for a couple hours before I start working on some basketball for Sunday night and get ready for the week.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH: I really like living in Colorado and being able to hike a bunch of different places. My goal this year is to do the incline here in Colorado Springs, but I definitely need to get in shape for that. Eventually, I want to climb up to Pikes Peak or at least get a fourteener (a mountain of at least 14,000 feet in elevation) in sometime this year. That will be a full-day event. But my guilty weekend pleasure is staying in bed and catching up on my books. I have a friend from high school who has written a few books, and I have caught up on all of her books that she released this year.
