NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: The N.Y. Daily News' Frank Isola noted Porzingis has "become the big thing” this season in the NBA. The fact he is "playing in New York, that has a lot to do with it, and also he’s a European sensation." Isola: "I haven’t heard one person yet say a bad thing about him. ... People look at the guy and think he’s going to be a superstar.” The N.Y. Daily News’ Andy Martino said fans "love Porzingis right now, so they’re going out and buying his stuff." Martino: "You don’t have to be on the map for five, 10 years to earn that kind of credibility anymore. YouTube sensations are popular and gone in weeks.” SNY’s Eamon McAnaney said it’s about a “fan base that’s starved” and Porzingis is “extremely likeable” (“Daily News Live,” SNY, 1/20). SNY’s Mark Malusis said Porzingis “gives this town, the basketball fan in this city, hope about what potentially they can absolutely be down the line” (“Loud Mouths,” SNY, 1/20). ESPN's Mike Greenberg said, "I’m not surprised at all Porzingis is as high as he is. I am surprised he is as low as he is. ... Porzingis has taken the city of New York by storm. Everybody loves him” (“Mike & Mike,” ESPN Radio, 1/21). In N.Y., Amara Grautski notes despite the fact that the "big market vs. small market dynamic has changed dramatically because of technology and social media, the jersey sale numbers are always a reminder that the Lakers, Knicks and Bulls move the needle." Porzingis has created a "tremendous following just 2 1/2 months into his career, a product of his unique skills, personality and international appeal." But it also is "because he plays in New York" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 1/21).
