Panthers Reviewing Security Measures After Protesters Rappel Down Stadium

The NFL Panthers are "reviewing the events surrounding an incident in which two individuals rappelled down Bank of America Stadium during Monday’s football game to protest the bank’s financing of a company building a natural gas facility," according to Roberts, Marusak & Peralta of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Among the unanswered questions "were how the protesters got the rappelling equipment into the stadium, and whether the stadium will implement any additional security measures as a result." Panthers Exec Dir of Risk Management Lance Emory said that the stadium "will re-emphasize training and execution of its entry procedures but couldn’t say whether that will result in longer waiting lines." Roberts, Marusak & Peralta note it is "still unclear how many people were temporarily displaced" from the area in the stadium that the protesters landed, and "whether they will be reimbursed for their tickets." Panthers Dir of Communications Steve Drummond: "We are in conversation with those who were inconvenienced” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 11/4). Erica Madrid, one of the protesters, said she entered Bank of America Stadium with rappelling gear “just like anybody else would, with very little on my person." Madrid: "I had a clear bag, just like anybody else would, and I got searched.” CBS’ Omar Villafranca noted the incident has "many security experts … questioning the NFL’s stadium security procedures” (“Evening News,” CBS, 11/3).
