Today Major League Baseball and Vixlet, a self proclaimed passion-fueled social network, joined forces to launch “MLB Fans”, an social network MLB fans around the world.

MLB Fans will aim to have baseball fans connect directly from their devices to their favorite teams, players and other fans around the world. Additionally, the new social network will help fans follow the game with thousands of MLB videos, photos, GIFs and commentary distributed by MLB.com every day.

Baseball fans will also be able to share their favorite experiences by posting personal photos and videos, commenting, and liking just like other major social networks. Fans will also be able to share their favorite content from MLB.com with friends through their accounts on other social networks.

Krishna and Lisa, co-founders of Vixlet, said, “MLB is not only the leader in sports, entertainment and technology, they are a global innovation powerhouse. We are excited that MLB has entrusted us to bring an entirely new product to MLB fans.”

“Vixlet has built a powerful social platform for baseball fans to create, distribute and share their most meaningful baseball experiences,” said Andrew Patterson, director, new media, MLB.com.  “We’re excited about working with Vixlet to make MLB Fans a great network and an important outlet for the daily baseball conversations millions of fans have.”

The MLB Fans app can be accessed via an iOS or Android app and is also available online at MLB.com/fans. It includes access to MLB.com’s other industry-leading digital platforms, including MLB.com At Bat, MLB.com Shop and more.

This partnership helps the MLB to continue to evolve and improve their already impressive digital footprint. MLBAM is of course one of the most valued digital streaming companies in the world. Adding a dedicated social network to their digital umbrella will certainly help Major League Baseball continue to reach younger generations on the types of platforms they use. Look for other leagues to keep a close eye on MLB Fans and even try and replicate it if it ends up being successful.
