MLB Facility Notes: Tigers Repair Damage From Fallen Concrete At Comerica Park

Tigers VP/Communications Ron Colangelo said that repairs "have been made to a step at Comerica Park after a piece of concrete fell on the main concourse Sunday" following a game against the Rangers. The team said that there "were no reported injuries." In Michigan, James Schmehl noted ballpark operations, along with a local contractor and a local inspector, "assessed damage Monday to the concrete step located behind first base," but it remains unclear what caused the piece of concrete "to fall approximately 20 feet" (MLIVE.com, 8/25).

AIN'T THAT A PEACH: In Atlanta, Dan Klepal reports Cobb County (Ga.) "will borrow" $376M for construction of SunTrust Park and make annual payments of $22.4M on that debt -- about $1.6M "less than originally anticipated." County taxpayers are providing $368M toward ballpark construction, but the county "has to borrow more than that to cover financing costs." Last year, it was reported that the county "might borrow as much as" $386M. The amount "is lower because of the lengthy appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court of the legality of the county’s contribution," as the county now "does not need to borrow money to pay capitalized interest on the debt" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 8/26).

DOING YARDS WORK? In Baltimore, Jeff Barker reported the Orioles "are considering updates" to Camden Yards, with the goal of ensuring that the 23-year-old ballpark "maximizes revenues for the club and possesses state-of-the-art amenities without sacrificing the ambiance of a venue many fans say feels like home." There is "no timetable for Camden Yards upgrades, and none are imminent." The club's original stadium lease expires in '21 and "provides the Orioles an option to extend for five years" (Baltimore SUN, 8/25).
