Nebraska Becomes Latest College To Stop Selling Jerseys Featuring Players' Numbers

The Univ. of Nebraska has become the latest college in "limiting the numbers on the jerseys fans can buy," as only No. 1 and No. 15, as in 2015, will be available for fans to buy this fall, according to Richard Piersol of the LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR. Licensees selling NU jerseys "are limited to the same numbers, and nobody gets a grandfather clause." The policy change "isn't just for football, but for all sports that have jersey replicas for sale." NU Associate AD/Marketing & Communications David Witty said, "We do not want to attribute any number to any specific student-athlete." Witty added that it was "apparent from Big Ten Media Days in Chicago that other Big Ten teams are doing to same thing." Piersol reported that nobody is "saying publicly this has anything to do directly" with the O'Bannon antitrust case, which would allow college athletes "to be paid for using their likeness and images in commercial ventures." Witty in an e-mail wrote the change was "not specifically" due to the O'Bannon case, but instead was more due to the "general landscape of collegiate athletics." Piersol noted while the jerseys for sale are not specifically tied to the players wearing them, two of the "most popular Huskers will wear those numbers this season" -- WR Jordan Westerkamp (No. 1) and WR De'Mornay Pierson-El (No. 15) (LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR, 8/2).
